‘Swab. Match. Cure.’ How a UVA football player answered a ‘life-changing’ call

Three days after the University of Virginia football team completed one of its most thrilling wins in years, a Cavalier player produced a milestone victory of a different kind.

On Sept. 29, the Monday following UVA’s wild, 46-38, double-overtime stunner over eighth-ranked Florida State University, Robbie Engelberg, a reserve safety and special teams contributor, was laid up in a Washington-area hospital bed after a lengthy procedure to donate his stem cells to a 65-year-old man battling a rare blood cancer.

Athlete stories

Hear from student athletes who saved lives

"I’m a testimony to how easy it is. All it takes is a cheek swab to get into the database. And you’ll not only get support from Gift of Life, but the trainers at your school, the coaches, everybody. Every single collegiate athlete should be doing this."

Robbie Engelberg

College Football

University of Virginia

"Gift of Life truly makes it too easy to help someone in the greatest way possible: to save someone’s life."

Adam LeBlanc

College Lacrosse

Florida Atlantic University

"I had joined the registry back in 2019, while a student – and lacrosse player – at the Rochester Institute of Technology. My teammate Walker Hare had previously joined Gift of Life and had already donated bone marrow, so our team was excited to all join the registry, too."

Patrick Shoemay

Professional Lacrosse Player

San Diego Seals

"The more I could do this and use this as a platform to raise awareness for Gift of Life and for anyone to swab, it's really special."

Deuce Schwartz

Offensive Quality Control Coach

San Francisco 49ers

"My decision to swab and donate came from a random athletic club meeting on a Tuesday night, and purely by coincidence, the study was done in the same small area of Detroit that Roberta is from. I am extremely fortunate that I was able to help her."

Sammy Friedrich

Men’s Soccer

Wofford College

"Finding out I was a match made me a little nervous, to be honest, I wasn’t sure how intensive the process was going to be, but after speaking with the people at Gift of Life, they made it clear that there was nothing to worry about. At the end of the day, I was given the opportunity to help somebody."
