When athletes step up, lives are saved

Every registry drive, every athlete who joins, and every school that opens its doors increases the chance that a patient battling blood cancer will find a lifesaving match. Play Your Part turns athletic leadership into measurable impact.

The need is urgent

Patients with leukemia, lymphoma and over 75 other life-threatening blood cancers and inherited autoimmune diseases often depend on a stem cell transplant from a genetically matched donor. For many, that match can only come from a registry of healthy volunteers willing to step forward.

Without enough registered donors, patients may not find a match in time.

What participation makes possible

Joining the registry takes just a few minutes. You provide basic information and complete a cheek swab. That’s it!

You could be the reason someone gets a second chance at life!

What this means for your campus

When athletic departments host registry drives, they create opportunities for student-athletes to contribute to something larger than themselves. Participation demonstrates leadership and commitment to community service and impact—values that resonate across campus and beyond.

One team. One drive. Many lives changed.

It takes only one matching donor to save a life. Every campus that welcomes Play Your Part increases the likelihood that a patient in need will find their match. The collective participation of athletic communities just like yours can transform outcomes for families waiting for hope.

Athlete stories

Hear from student athletes who saved lives

"I’m a testimony to how easy it is. All it takes is a cheek swab to get into the database. And you’ll not only get support from Gift of Life, but the trainers at your school, the coaches, everybody. Every single collegiate athlete should be doing this."

Robbie Engelberg

College Football

University of Virginia

"Gift of Life truly makes it too easy to help someone in the greatest way possible: to save someone’s life."

Adam LeBlanc

College Lacrosse

Florida Atlantic University

"I had joined the registry back in 2019, while a student – and lacrosse player – at the Rochester Institute of Technology. My teammate Walker Hare had previously joined Gift of Life and had already donated bone marrow, so our team was excited to all join the registry, too."

Patrick Shoemay

Professional Lacrosse Player

San Diego Seals

"The more I could do this and use this as a platform to raise awareness for Gift of Life and for anyone to swab, it's really special."

Deuce Schwartz

Offensive Quality Control Coach

San Francisco 49ers

"My decision to swab and donate came from a random athletic club meeting on a Tuesday night, and purely by coincidence, the study was done in the same small area of Detroit that Roberta is from. I am extremely fortunate that I was able to help her."

Sammy Friedrich

Men’s Soccer

Wofford College

"Finding out I was a match made me a little nervous, to be honest, I wasn’t sure how intensive the process was going to be, but after speaking with the people at Gift of Life, they made it clear that there was nothing to worry about. At the end of the day, I was given the opportunity to help somebody."
